Friday 18 Feb '05 -Name that tune!

Dit vond ik op http://www.voiceanddata.com.au/vd/latest_news/article.asp?id=3516
GAAF dat het nu eindelijk kan!!

Name that tune

Philips has developed a technology called Audio Fingerprinting that is sure to be a godsend for radio listeners who like what they hear but miss catching the title of the song.

The solution uses a mobile phone, which is held to the radio's speaker for a couple of seconds while the mystery song is played. The music is turned into a unique set of numbers and sent to a database that matches it with the identifying code of virtually every song ever made. Within seconds, a text message naming the song, the artist and the album will appear on the phone's display screen.

It works by providing a digital 'fingerprint' of a recording by breaking down a musical piece into segments of 10 milliseconds and then measuring the energy of 33 frequency bands of each segment. Using a special algorithm, the energies are transformed into a code, which is unique to each song, in much the same way that a fingerprint is to a human. When the mobile phone sends a burst of unknown music, the computer at the other end of the line then compares the fingerprint of the unknown music with the ones stored in a huge database. The search function has been refined so that typically only 3 seconds of music are needed to identify the song, even if it is degraded by compression or environment noise. It is also accurate in the sense that it can discriminate between different versions of a song, even if performed by the same artist.

For more professional applications, audio fingerprinting can be used to build broadcast monitoring systems for copyright verification, commercial verification and people metering. A tool for building more secure digital audio watermarks, it is also core to music filtering on music-sharing or peer-to-peer networks and can allow reliable control over the flow of copyrighted music.

Check http://www.skyradio.nl/index.aspx?Chapte.. . Werkt prima en heeft een gigantische database, zodat het niet alleen hits maar ook obscure albumtracks herkent.
